Greener Cleaning: Your Guide To Organic House Cleaning
We spend so much time in our homes that it’s only natural for us to want to keep them as tidy and clean as possible. This is particularly important if there are young children or pets in the home or anyone with respiratory conditions like asthma.
Traditional cleaning products may get things sparkling clean, but having lots of harsh chemicals in our homes just isn’t good for us. Such cleaners can also have a negative impact on the environment if they get into the water supply or into the air.
This guide will help you get to grips with eco-friendly home cleaning practices and how to use natural ingredients to make effective, environmentally-friendly house cleaners. You’ll also discover how Ecomilli’s gardening range can help you cultivate a more sustainable
Greener Cleaning With Eco-Friendly House Cleaners
Home cleaners don’t have to contain harsh chemicals to be effective. Not only can traditional cleaners be expensive, but they can be harmful to us and the environment, especially if they get into the air of the water systems.
Environmentally friendly house cleaners are easy and cheap to make yourself. You’ve probably got the key ingredients for eco-friendly house cleaners at home already.
White Vinegar
Vinegar is acidic to remove limescale, dirt, grease and grime from around the home. White distilled vinegar is best for cleaning as it won’t leave stains. However, we don’t recommend using vinegar on anything made of granite, marble, or wood, as it can damage the finish.¹
Baking Soda
This clever little powder doesn’t just belong in cakes – it can do wonders around the house as an eco-friendly house cleaner. Because of its abrasive texture and chemical makeup, it’s great for scrubbing stubborn dirt and stains away. It also has deodorizing qualities, eliminating bad smells.²
Castile Soap
Free from synthetic ingredients and animal products, this vegetable-based soap is helpful when added to environmentally friendly house cleaners. Gentle yet effective castile soap can be used throughout your home. It can leave a white residue on surfaces, but a quick wipe with a wet cloth solves that. ³
Essential Oils
When added to organic house cleaning products, essential oils leave your home smelling fresh and clean. Lemon, orange, and grapefruit oils are ideal for cleaning around the home, particularly in the kitchen or bathroom. Some oils, like tea trees, are antibacterial, making them perfect for eco-friendly home cleaning. ⁴

Beyond The Home
Eco-friendly home cleaning isn’t just for inside your home but also outside. In fact, the wealth of environmental benefits that come with having a compost pile make it a must-have for any eco-friendly home. Compost improves soil health, reduces waste, saves water, and promotes healthier plant growth – there’s a lot to love about compost.⁵
A compost pile also enables you to dispose of kitchen and garden waste, which then gets broken down to be used throughout your garden to keep it vibrant and healthy.
How To Start A Compost Pile
Starting a compost pile could be easier. First, find a bare patch of earth in your garden. You’ll want your pile to rest on bare earth so worms and other helpful organisms can enter it and help aerate the compost.
Next, lay a bed of straw or twigs on your patch of earth. You’ll want a few inches deep layer to help drainage and aeration. Now, you can start building up your compost material into layers. Alternate between moist and dry layers to encourage everything to break down thoroughly.
Kitchen scraps used coffee grounds, certain tea bag brands, and garden waste can all go on the pile. You can also add manure, which will speed things up.
You’ll want to keep your pile moist but not soaked. It’s a good idea to cover the pile as this allows you to keep the right amount of moisture in while keeping excess out. Finally, remember to turn over your pile every so often as this aerates the soil.
Once your compost pile is up and running, you don’t have to layer materials like you did at the start. You
